Commented on A Tokyo photographer offers tips on taking pro shots with an iPhone 3GS
@ the commenters carping about how "unprofessional" these shots are. "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept" -Henri Cartier-Bresson The image second from the top is beautiful. It captures a time and place, motion, light, shadow, and form. I think a super-sharp...

Commented on Teetering planters
I have a smallish community garden plot that could definitely use one of these, for herbs and the like. Looks easy and inexpensive to build, thanks....

Commented on Xeni on Rachel Maddow Show: Ralph Lauren's Photoshop of Horrors
I think I heard you say in this clip that your attorneys were these guys: http://www.msk.com/practiceGroups.asp?detail=1018 really?...
-
Commented on Verizon and AT&T defend thuggish text messaging prices
@#4: No, pricing can be criminal when prices are set by anti-competitive collusion, as seems to be the case here. How else would all three companies have changed their prices to exactly the same thing at exactly the same time?...
-
Commented on Econo-Keys, the reversible keyboard
Except that it appears to suffer from the netbook right-shift key problem. The only real use of a portable external keyboard that I can see is with a netbook. So, making one with the same deficiencies as a built-in netbook...

Commented on Pool rules at Florida condo complex
"Swim Diapers"? I had no idea such a thing existed. How does that work?...

Commented on International Sockets
But if you're serious about keeping your plug in the wall, twist-lock is the only way to go. /theaternerd...

Commented on Ragdoll Metaphysics: Thief 4, Eidos, and An Uncertain American Legacy
"the ridiculous nomenclature of the title" I think the word you are looking for is "typography". Nomenclature means "a system for naming things."...

Commented on Photo: NASA Snack Mobile
Oops, the space shuttle has "United States" in Helvetica. Memory, you are a fickle place....
-
Commented on Photo: NASA Snack Mobile
I love the visual reference to the space shuttle too, especially how "Snack Mobile" echoes "Space Shuttle", both in Helvetica....
-
Commented on The Geospatial Revolution
I like to play a game where I set Google maps to satellite imagery without labels, zoom out as far as I can go, and try to zoom in to various personal, cultural, or geographical landmarks using only geographical cues...

Commented on Triple Rock: X-men Origins: Wolverine, or Bullet from a Logan
"Guns empower us in immediate and pleasing ways as, with them, we create a cause and effect firework display across our interactive spaces." If only the NRA were this candid about why guns are so important to them....

Commented on Dell Hell: The Sequel
Gah. The thought of having some random Dell support guy flash the BIOS on my computer remotely just makes my skin crawl. What an idiot....
-
Commented on Hugo Voters' Packet: practically every Hugo-nominated work as a free download for WorldCon attendees
@#8: The linked post makes it clear that all of the authors (and their publishers) were given the choice of including their nominated works in the packet or not. Presumably some of them turned it down....
-
Commented on Google Book Search settlement gives Google a virtual monopoly over literature
@#20: Yes, a group of authors could get together and object to the settlement. There is a mechanism for this built into the process by which class actions are settled. I'm not sure what stage this case is at, but...

Commented on Retro art exhibit Famicase returning to Japan in May
Scrolling through, for a fleeting second I though "Whale of Noise" was something one could actually play. Hopes. Dashed....

Commented on Somali Pirates Have a Livejournal
I can't decide if this is funny or in rather poor taste. Both, I guess. Let's hope better solutions than fighting another "Barbary Coast" war over this business can be found. (different coast, I know)...

Commented on It is 1994 and you just bought a Gateway desktop PC
My first windows PC (my family had an Apple IIe before that) had that spacecow as the default wallpaper. I remember the salesguy on the phone telling my Father that its 650MB of hard drive space was enough to store...

Commented on Nine year old's survey project excluded from school because he learned some people don't think of themselves as male or female
@BARDFINN #2: You may recall California passing a constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage a few months ago. We've got plenty of bigots, homophobes, gender normativists, etc. here....

Commented on Game-800 has camera, media player, retrogaming ... and text-to-speech ebook reading!
That's brilliant. Though "China Grabber" does not sound like a place I want to send my credit card details....

Commented on Guess what the Big Ass Fans corporation manufactures?
I briefly went to a gym that had one of these. When I signed up the desk agent showed me around. "And this," she said, "is our big-ass fan." "Why yes. It certainly is," I replied, not seeing the label....
-
Commented on Sony adds half a million public domain books to Reader library
Why is a 3g modem such a critical feature for an eBook reader? As long as it updates via USB and memory card and has enough internal storage to hold a few dozen books, I can't see why it's even...

Commented on Mark Ryden prints available
@ZAPGUNNER: How about instead of whining about other people writing about art you don't like, go elsewhere and promote a living artist whose work you do like. I'm sure he or she is out there and could use your support....

Commented on Oregon or bust: Starvingeyes' surprisingly well played Fall Out Boy Trail

-
Commented on Laptop: Office Depot salespeople lie about inventory if you don't buy extra laptop accessories
"It sounds like bad eggs, not systemic company-wide policy." I dunno, it sounds like the employees' actions are a direct result of the systemic company-wide policy of evaluating salespeople on their accessory attachment rate more than their total sales....
-
Commented on Video of shell-less egg one of my chickens laid
You can mail-order live chicks? How on earth does that work? What do they ship them in? The post office is OK with this? My guess is that this is probably a totally standard thing that I haven't heard of...

Commented on USB Cat Tail
I'm seeing these everywhere all of a sudden [well, not the USB version]. Seems it's the hip thing to do right now to saftey-pin a fake tail onto your messenger bag....
-
Commented on 28 Weeds Later: Plants vs. Zombies will indeed feature plants
I finally realized what the plants v. zombies screen shot reminded me of: the graphics make me think of the SNES classic "Zombies Ate My Neighbors". The football-player zombies especially fit that game's take on zombified Americana....
-
Commented on Frond of the dead: the first look at PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies
Funny that there's not a single plant unit depicted--they all look like fungi to me. I wonder if that's an intentional joke?...
