Commented on Guess what the Big Ass Fans corporation manufactures?
I've actually seen one of these in a Walmart. Yeah that's right in a Walmart, not for sale, but built into the ceiling in the outdoor area....

Commented on Short Film: What's in the Box?, a futuristic tribute to Half-Life (probably)
Hmmm... look at 1:22 at the ticker tape, "largest single collapse since Black Mesa." There's no doubt this has to do with Half-Life....

Commented on Short Film: What's in the Box?, a futuristic tribute to Half-Life (probably)
Muteboy, I hope so, anything above 87% conversion efficiency might means they have GODLIKE solar cells. I don't think that we are anywhere near such solar cells, it's probably part of the story......

Commented on Mental_floss' step-by-step guide to destroying civilization with nanotechnology
jjasper, the reason many people think that the grey goo scenario is feasible is this reason, self-replicating nanorobots might be a lot more efficient than anything in nature. The overall efficiency of photosynthesis is 6.6%, the efficiency of the best...

Commented on Funny commercial for Microsoft's Songsmith
This can mean one thing, Microsoft has become totally automated and is now algorithmically generating adverts. We should work fast to make sure Microsoft never becomes sentient and takes over the world....

Commented on 1970s humor mag predicts future
This reminds of this: http://www.pemberley.com/janeinfo/1831steam.jpg Look familiar? It's a Victorian cartoon, in other words the Victorian equivalent of Super Cracked....

Commented on Downwind faster than the wind - Part 4
CHRS I am probably using a higher ratio, as in a wheel that is a bit larger. I tried using lego pulleys with and without tires, slides either way, slides less without tires....

Commented on Downwind faster than the wind - Part 4
Reminds me a bit of a Brennan torpedo, a torpedo with a propeller driven by unwinding a large spool of cable with a shore based steam engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brennan_torpedo I just built a model of the cart in the video out...

Commented on HOWTO Make a 3D printer out of Legos
Enochrewt, I have done some experiments using smaller nozzles and got some good traces, however the nozzle tended to get jammed. If I use a more powerful air pump or a less viscous material like wax this shouldn't be a...

Commented on HOWTO Make a 3D printer out of Legos
Anthony, the 'pixelated' appearance of the cone in the photo was due to air bubbles in the extruder and a bump when I was taking the photo. This 3d printer more like a vector plotter than your typical inkjet printer....

Commented on HOWTO Make a 3D printer out of Legos
Thank you Cory for posting this. I am the guy who made this thing. Eustace, I compensate for this by gearing the rotational axis down such that 1 degree of motor rotation equals about 0.1-0.01 degrees of axis rotation. But...

Commented on Mundane Gadget Spam of the Day: Teradon School Bell Controller
"Time is corrected automatically from the Internet. You never have to change time on the bell system again. Intercom system programming can be monitored remotely. Make room calls and announcements from your telephone or master handset." This brings up some...

Commented on Build a Lifeform contest -- winner goes to synthetic biology conference in HK
Getting -80 C temperatures and building incubators isn't that hard, you just buy a couple peltier coolers off ebay. But now that you mention Costco it shouldn't be to hard to modify a toaster oven to do incubation. It's the...

Commented on Build a Lifeform contest -- winner goes to synthetic biology conference in HK
I disagree Zuzu, enzymes and equipment useful for synthetic biology still cost a lot. $140 is quite a lot of money to lay down for an enzyme you can't use again....
-
Commented on Smithsonian magazine on synthetic diamonds that fool experts
Actually the diamond cartels have great reason to worry the standard enthalpy of formation of diamond is 1.8 kj/mole, not that much in chemistry terms. In comparison the formation of solid sodium chloride releases 411 kj/mole. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_enthalpy_change_of_formation_(data_table) It is also...

Commented on RepRap universal constructor achieves self-replication
First off reprap isn't intended to achieve total replication(yet), just replication of the parts not cheaply available everywhere, like nuts, bolts, and threaded rod. Of course reprap can't build itself, but reprap might be able to build print out parts...

Commented on Explosions rock the Moon
Now wait just a minute here, who says it's meteorites? Flashes on the Moon or Transient Lunar Phenomenon(TLPs) might be caused by things other than impact events like the explosive release of radon gas or electrostatic phenomenon. Evidence for these...
