Unfortunately we seem to be training people to ignore or "unfeel" even the most realistic renderings of human suffering through media and video games especially. We are fostering the development of "Killer Instincts" that being the title of one of the most popular video game arcade series circa 1994. These days games like Grand Theft Auto let you torture civilians and kick and beat people to death after you carjack them as they plead for mercy, how is that different from holding a Pleo by the tail? All of this concerns me very much, and I like video games!...

Poor Pleo. I killed a caterpillar by accident once while collecting specimens for my biosphere. I was about seven. That whole summer, every time I saw a caterpillar I would flinch, and it seemed I was stepping on a lot more of them, like they were lining up to be slaughtered. (They were -everywhere-.) Later on I realized they weren't caterpillars, but webworms, and the periodic infestation we have.
