Commented on ICANN haz cheezburger (Update to "Xeni on Maddow")
By that logic, shouldn't you need to learn hieroglyphics to write on paper?...

Commented on ICANN haz cheezburger (Update to "Xeni on Maddow")
>A common, default language is a beneficial thing. Latin-character-only domain names were, and could've continued to be, an important part of encouraging that common, default language. That's easy to say when it's your language that's the "default"....

Commented on Anvil Shooting: using explosives to fire anvils -- yes, ANVILS -- into the air
Launch at 1:33, landing at 1:39. 6s in air, so it's at its highest point and no velocity at 3s. d=1/2*at^2, a = g = 9.8 m/s^2, distance = 9.8*3*3 = 88.2 meters = 288 feet. Nice!...

Commented on Trailer for Scott Westerfeld's YA steampunk novel LEVIATHAN
The "clanker vs. darwinist" conflict is a nice echo of Bruce Sterling's "Shaper/Mechanist" posthuman factions - and considering the opening line of Uglies, Westerfeld is probably doing it on purpose....

Commented on Visualizing a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book
The only one of those that really stuck with me is "Inside UFO 54-40" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_UFO_54-40 which had an ongoing plot element about a utopian planet you could never reach by making any decision. Turns out the pages describing your arrival...

Commented on Death Star annihilates the Enterprise
#39: if tranporters are so cheap, why did they take a shuttlecraft from the Academy to the Enterprise? But even given cheap transporters, you still need to provide safe working conditions for all those people in a vacuum - if...

Commented on Death Star annihilates the Enterprise
You build the Enterprise on Earth the same reason you build iPods in China even though most of them are not staying there - cheaper access to labor and materials. Providing space-station living space for all those engineers, welders, etc....

Commented on Neil Gaiman on Colbert Report
What's the over-under on "F**k it, We're All Going To Die" by Stephen Colbert with art by Art Spiegelman actually being published within the next 2 years? I feel like there's at least a 50% chance....

Commented on Octopus removes valve, floods floor of Santa Monica Pier Aquarium
TheMadLibrarian - good chance she was provided with toys but did this anyway. Can't you imagine humans, imprisoned by aliens, breaking the life support system in their cells even if given toys?...

Commented on What it feels like to die in a black hole
About the "squeezing" - my understanding is that you'd see yourself, turned inside out, approaching from all sides until you're crushed by yourself. I created a symbol for the asteroid Apophis as part of an artistic project - take a...

Commented on Tally-mark birthday tee
I think we agree on the actual candle presentation. Asking around at work, I found a few people who agree with you two that binary digits are special and indexed from the right, but most people seemed to agree with...

Commented on Tally-mark birthday tee
Does anyone else do binary birthday candles? My circle of friends started when I was 27 - we put 5 candles on the cake, lighting the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th. This year I'll be lighting the 1st and 4th...

Commented on Custom Mario levels used as rhythm section for anime theme medley
This video was heavily analyzed at Kotaku a little while ago: http://kotaku.com/387830/this-hands+free-super-mario-world-level-plays-sweet-sweet-music The music selection is a standardized medley from 4chan/nikoniko Japanese net culture, and includes popular anime and game music - there's a list in the Kotaku comments thread....

Commented on I Want Sandy - perfect productivity email bot is free and public
I had the same thought - "Sandy" can even be an androgynous name, but the art and pronouns throughout the site make it clear that this is a female algorithm that's responding to your email....
