Commented on How to saber a bottle of champagne
I learned to do this at my son's wedding in France this summer (I'm American). I was also told to run the knife up the seam side so maybe there is something to that theory. My daughter-in-law's father, a Frenchman,...

Commented on A visit to a store called Mr. Stuff in Los Angeles
In Chicago we have a store called American Science and Surplus that sells just about anything - machine parts, circuit boards, bizarre toys, components for build-your-own telescopes. I got my first microscope there when I was maybe 10 years old...

Typical republikkkan. Now the teabagger slimeball's web site has been taken off line. Perhaps they've taken a bit of a hit to the bandwidth limit at their 'contact us' link?...

Commented on Furniture slider prosthetic legs for turtle
The furniture slides will wear down over time so they shouldn't be permanently attached. I think a better solution would be to affix 2 little wheels or even steel ball bearings. Who knows, he may even set a land speed...

Commented on Dutch government tries to stop 13-year-old girl from sailing around world solo

Commented on Dutch government tries to stop 13-year-old girl from sailing around world solo
The government has every right to step in and prevent her from driving the family car around the block - even if she had her parent's consent. So why not in this case? I don't care how mature she is...

Commented on The incredible "ear stones" of fish
Takuan Thanks for the pic. It should be interesting to try it out though the fish that I find on my beach aren't nearly as fresh looking as the specimen shown here and I'd wager they're more aromatic as well....

Commented on The incredible "ear stones" of fish
Do fresh water fish have otoliths as well? I sometimes find rather large remains of Muskellunge and Northern Pike washed up on the shore by my home and it would make for a fun teaching opportunity with my grandson....
