  My household heavily supplements our diets from dumpsters. The bins in the laneway behind the bakery provide more high-end, quality bread than we could ever eat (and it's better at 1 day old, when it's thrown out, than the crap you buy pre-sliced for $5 a bag in the supermarket), and there are plenty of greengrocers who like to dump entire trays of mangoes because one or two has gone bad and it's not worth their while to sort the lot. Punnets of cherry tomatoes, dozens of bell peppers & zucchinis, bags of potatoes- pretty much everything except leaf veggies,...

  In college there was a distributor of those bottled smoothies that usually made for a productive run. We usually had enough to feed a house of six for a few days at a time, the protein ones usually wound up getting chucked though. They never tasted as good later, when I moved away and got tired of paying $4 a bottle. We also picked up the stale bread from a nearby bakery every Friday evening. Sometimes it filled the back of a pickup... 5-10 garbage bags full of perfectly edible bread. My roommate would play bread Santa and deliver bags...

  Thanks, 17. :) No worries, zikzak, it's all legit recycling. But I know the deal you're talking about--I used to work in a college bookstore and was occasionally ordered to destroy and dispose of slightly used or in some cases entirely new textbooks. I went against my bibliophilic and thrifty impulses and did what I was told to but MAN! was it tempting to slip a few pieces of the "garbage" and walk them across the street to re-sell them at the other college book store....
